Peyronie’s disease

Peyronie’s disease, also known as penile curvature, causes a man’s penis to curve or bend.

Peyronie’s disease happens when scar tissue called plaque forms under the skin of the penis.

Note: This plaque is not the same kind of plaque that can build up in a person’s arteries.

Peyronie’s disease can make sex

difficult, painful or
even impossible.

Signs of Peyronie’s disease can include:

  • hard lumps on one or more sides of the penis
  • soft or painful erections
  • trouble having sex

Men may also notice their penis has shrunk in size or gotten shorter.

Peyronie’s disease
is not contagious.

While the exact causes are not clear, experts believe the disease may result from an acute (short term) injury to the penis, repeated injury to the penis or from autoimmune disease.

Peyronie’s is diagnosed by a urologist based on clinical history and physical exam. Treatment options may include oral medications, penile injections and surgery.
